Jesus is predicting his own death, and then, incredibly, suggesting that he would overcome death and rise again. Peter, leading the outcry tells Jesus that this mustn't happen. Jesus then outlines what for most of us becomes a very difficult challenge. Jesus says quite clearly, that, if you want to be one of his followers then you too must suffer, you too must pick up your cross and follow the pathway that Jesus will set for you.At the heart of this difficult challenge is the cross, which for us so many centuries later can simply mean I CROSSED OUT.
